Compassless Harbor Charts

AOI creative concept · Maps and invented diagrams

Draw an imaginary harbor chart whose routes are organized by shelter rather than compass direction.

An AOI creative concept, not an established historical movement.

Simple objects, geometric shapes and connecting marks arranged as a diagram

A closer look

Navy, warm ivory and one rust route line; flat ink diagram. The focal scene: an invented harbor organized around one protected pocket.

An invented diagram

Draw an imaginary harbor chart whose routes are organized by shelter rather than compass direction. Broad enclosing shapes and narrow passages establish the geography, while a few simple marks suggest vessels without giving the diagram real navigational authority.

Organize the route

Create a large pale inlet surrounded by three dark protective masses. Draw one thin route that enters through the narrowest gap and ends in a calm open pocket. Place three small vessel-like rectangles along it at unequal intervals. Omit coordinates, north arrows and official symbols; the chart is a compositional fiction.

Check the internal logic

If the route crosses a solid mass accidentally, the diagram's internal logic fails. Check every passage and termination. Avoid filling the chart with decorative labels: the difference between exposed water, narrow access and protected space should be visible without words.

Technique notes

Make the shelter shapes translucent and stack two alternative routes, with one clearly stopping short of the safe pocket.

When prompting an image model, spell out the rule and visible relationships. The invented style name alone is not a reliable instruction. Compare outputs against the critique above and revise the specific failed relationship.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

Start with the defining rule

Create an original illustration of an invented harbor organized around one protected pocket. Draw an imaginary harbor chart whose routes are organized by shelter rather than compass direction. Broad enclosing shapes and narrow passages establish the geography, while a few simple marks suggest vessels without giving the diagram real navigational authority. Use navy, warm ivory and one rust route line; flat ink diagram. Keep the composition readable, with a clear focal area and quiet surrounding space. No lettering, signatures or watermark.

Build the fuller composition

Create an original Compassless Harbor Charts composition. Use navy, warm ivory and one rust route line; flat ink diagram. Preserve the defining constraint: Draw an imaginary harbor chart whose routes are organized by shelter rather than compass direction. Avoid decorative clutter, readable text and watermarks.

Try a deliberate variation

Create an experimental illustration based on this rule: Draw an imaginary harbor chart whose routes are organized by shelter rather than compass direction. Broad enclosing shapes and narrow passages establish the geography, while a few simple marks suggest vessels without giving the diagram real navigational authority. Variation: Make the shelter shapes translucent and stack two alternative routes, with one clearly stopping short of the safe pocket. Use navy, warm ivory and one rust route line; flat ink diagram. Make the changed relationship unmistakable while keeping supporting details restrained. No captions, signatures or watermark.
