Detailed Description

Thomas Hart Benton was an American painter and muralist. He was born in Neosho, Missouri, and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Académie Julian in Paris. Benton was a leading figure in the American Regionalism movement, which sought to portray realistic and everyday scenes of middle-class life in the United States. His work is characterized by strong lines, bold colors, and a decided lack of pretension. Benton’s best-known work includes the mural “A Social History of the State of Missouri” (1936-1937), which is located in the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. Other notable works include “The American Historical Epic” (1941-1942), a mural at the New York World’s Fair, and “The Sources of Country Music” (1975), a mural at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. Benton was also a prolific painter of portraits, landscapes, and still-lifes. His portraits include those of President Harry S. Truman, Mark Twain, and Woody Guthrie. His landscapes depict the American Midwest, and his still-lifes often feature fruit and flowers. Benton died in 1975, at the age of 85.
