THE AOI FIELD GUIDE · LOOK CLOSER, MAKE SOMETHING

Splitfocus Table Worlds

AOI creative concept · Light and photographic experiments

Divide a tabletop scene into two zones of sharply different focus, but let one continuous object cross the boundary.

An AOI creative concept, not an established historical movement.

A closer look

Porcelain white, soft gray and muted green; controlled photographic focus contrast. The focal scene: a spoon crossing between a sharply focused cup and a soft vase.

Choose the intervention

Divide a tabletop scene into two zones of sharply different focus, but let one continuous object cross the boundary. The crossing makes the focus decision visible as a compositional intervention rather than an accidental soft photograph.

Construct the image

Place a long spoon diagonally between a sharply rendered cup and a softly rendered vase. Keep the spoon handle crisp near the cup, then let it soften decisively as it enters the vase's zone. Use a calm background and one broad light source. The boundary should be clear enough to notice without becoming a hard collage cut.

Keep the comparison clear

If no object crosses the focus change, the two zones may feel unrelated. Preserve the spoon's continuous shape and avoid adding several competing boundaries. This is an image-making exercise, not a claim that all lenses create this exact focus pattern.

Technique notes

Use a folded napkin as the crossing object and make its stitched edge the line that carries the viewer between sharp and soft regions.

When prompting an image model, spell out the rule and visible relationships. The invented style name alone is not a reliable instruction. Compare outputs against the critique above and revise the specific failed relationship.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

Start with the defining rule

Create an original illustration of a spoon crossing between a sharply focused cup and a soft vase. Divide a tabletop scene into two zones of sharply different focus, but let one continuous object cross the boundary. The crossing makes the focus decision visible as a compositional intervention rather than an accidental soft photograph. Use porcelain white, soft gray and muted green; controlled photographic focus contrast. Keep the composition readable, with a clear focal area and quiet surrounding space. No lettering, signatures or watermark.

Build the fuller composition

Create an original Splitfocus Table Worlds composition. Use porcelain white, soft gray and muted green; controlled photographic focus contrast. Preserve the defining constraint: Divide a tabletop scene into two zones of sharply different focus, but let one continuous object cross the boundary. Avoid decorative clutter, readable text and watermarks.

Try a deliberate variation

Create an experimental illustration based on this rule: Divide a tabletop scene into two zones of sharply different focus, but let one continuous object cross the boundary. The crossing makes the focus decision visible as a compositional intervention rather than an accidental soft photograph. Variation: Use a folded napkin as the crossing object and make its stitched edge the line that carries the viewer between sharp and soft regions. Use porcelain white, soft gray and muted green; controlled photographic focus contrast. Make the changed relationship unmistakable while keeping supporting details restrained. No captions, signatures or watermark.
