In the late 19th century, a group of Russian artists known as the Peredvizhniki (or “Wanderers”) broke away from the stifling confines of the Academy of Arts. These artists, who included Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, and Mikhail Vrubel, among others, believed that art should be accessible to the people and not confined to the elite. They traveled throughout Russia, painting the everyday life of the common people. Their work was sometimes political, as in Repin’s famous painting “Barge Haulers on the Volga” (1870-73), which depicted the backbreaking labor of the workers. The Peredvizhniki were not the only Russian artists to break away from the Academy. In the 1880s, a group of artists known as the “World of Art” (or Mir Iskusstva) formed in St. Petersburg. This group, which included such luminaries as Mikhail Vrubel, Valentin Serov, and Konstantin Korovin, was interested in Western art, particularly the work of the French Impressionists. They sought to bring a new level of artistry to Russia. The work of the Peredvizhniki and the World of Art had a profound impact on the development of Russian art in the 20th century. The artists of the “Silver Age”, such as Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova, were heavily influenced by the work of these earlier groups.
