Detailed Description
In the late 19th century, a group of Russian artists known as the Peredvizhniki (or ÃÂÃÂWanderersÃÂÃÂ) broke away from the stifling confines of the Academy of Arts. These artists, who included Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, and Mikhail Vrubel, among others, believed that art should be accessible to the people and not confined to the elite. They traveled throughout Russia, painting the everyday life of the common people. Their work was sometimes political, as in RepinÃÂÃÂs famous painting ÃÂÃÂBarge Haulers on the VolgaÃÂÃÂ (1870-73), which depicted the backbreaking labor of the workers. The Peredvizhniki were not the only Russian artists to break away from the Academy. In the 1880s, a group of artists known as the ÃÂÃÂWorld of ArtÃÂÃÂ (or Mir Iskusstva) formed in St. Petersburg. This group, which included such luminaries as Mikhail Vrubel, Valentin Serov, and Konstantin Korovin, was interested in Western art, particularly the work of the French Impressionists. They sought to bring a new level of artistry to Russia. The work of the Peredvizhniki and the World of Art had a profound impact on the development of Russian art in the 20th century. The artists of the ÃÂÃÂSilver AgeÃÂÃÂ, such as Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova, were heavily influenced by the work of these earlier groups. Today, Russian art is as varied and dynamic as the country itself. From the traditional icons and folk art to the cutting-edge work of contemporary artists, Russia has a rich and diverse artistic heritage.
