Detailed Description
Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who was active in the Dutch Golden Age. He is known for his paintings of domestic scenes, interiors, and portraits. His work is characterized by its use of light and shadow, as well as its realistic style. Vermeer was born in Delft, Netherlands, in 1632. He began his career as an artist in the 1650s, and by the 1660s, he had established himself as a successful painter. His paintings were popular with both the public and the aristocracy, and he was able to command high prices for his work. Vermeer’s most famous painting is “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (1665), which is now in the collection of the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague. Other notable works include “The Milkmaid” (1658), “The Music Lesson” (1662), and “The Astronomer” (1668). Vermeer died in 1675, at the age of 43. His death was likely due to a plague that was sweeping through the Netherlands at the time. He was buried in the Delft churchyard. Vermeer’s work had a significant impact on subsequent generations of artists. His use of light and shadow was particularly influential, and his work was an important precursor to the work of the Impressionists.
