Infrared Photography

Photographic technique

Infrared photography can make familiar vegetation and skies feel unfamiliar by recording light beyond ordinary visible red.

A closer look

Choose a scene with contrasting materials before thinking about exotic color.

Understanding the subject

Near-infrared photography uses a sensor or film and filtering suited to wavelengths outside normal visible vision. It is different from thermal imaging, which concerns emitted heat. Bright foliage and dark skies are familiar possibilities, but the result depends on the capture system, filter, subject and processing. False-color versions map recorded information into visible colors; those colors should not be presented as the scene’s appearance to the unaided eye.

AOI looking and making workshop

Choose a scene with contrasting materials before thinking about exotic color. A tree beside dark water offers more useful structure than an undifferentiated mass of leaves. Keep a stable viewpoint when comparing visible and infrared captures, and inspect focus with the actual equipment. In an AI illustration, describe the desired tonal relationships rather than claiming a real infrared exposure took place. Preserve enough texture in pale foliage to avoid a blank white mass, and use sky darkness to frame the subject instead of overwhelming it.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

Pale canopy

Create an infrared-inspired landscape illustration of a single leafy tree beside still dark water, pale textured foliage, deep sky and crisp trunk detail. Keep the composition quiet and label no scientific measurements.

A garden in false color

Create a false-color infrared-inspired garden scene with cream foliage, muted cyan shadows and a dark winding pond. Anchor the unusual palette with a clear path and a small stone bridge.

Material contrast

Create an original monochrome triptych comparing leaves, brick and water through an imagined infrared tonal treatment. Keep a consistent viewpoint and emphasize material contrast; no thermal overlays or temperature scales.

Creative studies to try

Explore these collected prompts as creative interpretations. They are starting points for image-making, not reproductions of historical artworks or evidence about a tradition.

Study 1 — Infrared Photography

Apply the following visual style to my subject or project, preserving its core content and purpose. Create a convincing infrared photograph with luminous white foliage, dark dramatic skies, crisp detail, and subtly false-colored architectural surfaces. Preserve photographic optics and believable shadows. Adapt the composition and palette to suit my subject. Do not add text unless my project calls for it.
