Detailed Description
Garfield is a comic strip created by Jim Davis. Published since 1978, it chronicles the life of the title character, the cat Garfield; his owner, Jon Arbuckle; and Arbuckle’s dog, Odie. As of 2013, it was syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals, and held the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip. Though this is its most popular meaning, Garfield also refers to a genre of painting characterized by bold, flat shapes and colors. The Garfield comic strip debuted on June 19, 1978. The focus of the strip is Garfield the cat; Jon, his owner; and Odie, Jon’s dog. Garfield is a lazy, fat cat who loves to eat and sleep. He hates Mondays and loves lasagna. Jon is a nice guy, but he is often the butt of Garfield’s jokes. Odie is a sweet but dumb dog who is always getting into trouble. The Garfield paintings are characterized by bold, flat shapes and colors. They are often compared to the work of Piet Mondrian and other abstract artists. Garfield’s creator, Jim Davis, has said that he was influenced by the work of American artist Charles Schulz. Some of the most famous Garfield paintings include “Garfield at the Beach” (1979), “Garfield in the Snow” (1981), and “Garfield in Paradise” (1982). These and other Garfield paintings can be found in museums and private collections around the world.
