Detailed Description

Fresco is a technique of painting on plaster, either on walls or ceilings. The word fresco comes from the Italian word affresco which means “fresh”. Frescoes are very popular in Italy, Spain, and Latin America. Fresco painting was first developed in the early Renaissance by the Italian artist Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337). He painted frescoes on the walls of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy. These frescoes are some of the most famous in the world. Other famous Italian fresco painters include Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), who painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling in Rome; and Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520), who painted the Vatican Stanze in Rome. In Spain, the best-known fresco painter is Diego Velázquez (1599-1660). He painted many famous frescoes, including the “Waterseller of Seville” and the “Surrender of Breda”. Latin American countries with a strong tradition of fresco painting include Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia. Fresco painting is a difficult and time-consuming process. First, the plaster must be carefully prepared. Then, the painter must work quickly, before the plaster dries. Once the painting is completed, it must be allowed to dry slowly and evenly, or it will crack. Frescoes are very durable, and can last for centuries if they are properly cared for.
