Detailed Description

Austrian art is the painting, sculpture and architecture of the Austrian-speaking world, especially Austria. It has been strongly influenced by the art of neighbouring countries, especially Germany. The most important Austrian artist of the early modern period was Albrecht Dürer, who was born in Nuremberg and spent most of his career in Vienna. His most famous paintings include the portraits of Emperor Maximilian I and his family, and the large woodcut of the Apocalypse. Other important Austrian artists of the early modern period include Hans Holbein the Younger, who worked in Vienna for a time, and Matthias Grünewald, who was born in Austria but worked mostly in Germany. In the 19th century, the most important Austrian artists were the painters Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and Hans Makart. Waldmüller was a realist painter who is especially known for his landscapes, while Makart was a highly successful academic painter who specialized in historical and mythological scenes. The most important Austrian artist of the 20th century was Gustav Klimt, who was a leading member of the Art Nouveau movement. His most famous paintings include The Kiss and the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Other important Austrian artists of the 20th century include Oskar Kokoschka, who was a leading expressionist painter, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who was an important architect and artist.
