Winslow Homer was an American painter best known for his marine paintings. He was born in Boston in 1836, and he first started painting while he was working as a commercial illustrator in New York City. He moved to England in 1859, and he returned to the United States in 1873. Homer’s paintings are characterized by their realistic depictions of everyday life, and they often capture the beauty and tranquility of the natural world. Some of his most famous paintings include “Breezing Up” (1873), “The Gulf Stream” (1899), and “Snap the Whip” (1872).
