Toyism is a post-modern art movement that started in the Netherlands in the early 1990s. The name is derived from the Dutch word “toyen”, meaning “to play”. Toyism is characterized by its use of bright colors, childlike imagery, and often humorous themes. The movement was started by a group of four artists, who were all friends: Daan van Golden, Dirkjan Karelse, Marcel Schmalgemeijer, and Roeland Tweehuysen. They were all part of the Dutch underground art scene, and were influenced by punk and new wave music. The group held their first exhibition in 1991, and since then Toyism has grown into a global movement, with artists from all over the world participating.
