Stuckism

Contemporary art group

Stuckism is an identifiable artists’ movement with stated positions. It is not a synonym for every direct or figurative painting.

A closer look

For an independent painting exercise, choose a subject you can describe plainly and decide what matters emotionally in the scene.

Understanding the subject

Stuckism is associated with a group and its published arguments about art, including a commitment to painting and criticism of aspects of contemporary conceptual practice. Those positions should be attributed to the movement rather than presented as settled judgments about artistic value. Works by individual participants differ. A picture’s awkwardness, sincerity or recognizable subject does not by itself prove affiliation.

AOI looking and making workshop

For an independent painting exercise, choose a subject you can describe plainly and decide what matters emotionally in the scene. Let simplified forms and visible brushwork support that intention rather than treating roughness as an automatic sign of honesty. Keep the relationship between figures, objects and setting clear. Compare a tightly controlled version with a more direct one to see what each gains. The prompts below are original figurative studies, not attempts to certify an image as a work by a member of the group.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

A direct scene

Create an original figurative painting of a person waiting beside a closed shop, simplified shapes, visible brushwork and a restrained palette. Emphasize posture and ordinary feeling rather than polished realism.

An everyday argument

Create an original painting of two friends disagreeing over a garden plan, clear gestures, domestic objects and deliberately direct handling. Keep the scene readable without text or exaggerated caricature.

Two ways of seeing

Create a diptych of an invented kitchen corner, one panel measured and one more freely brushed. Keep the same objects and compare how handling changes the emotional tone.
