Stranger Things

Television visual storytelling

Stranger Things combines familiar everyday settings with uncanny interruptions. Contrast often carries more atmosphere than a frame full of monsters.

A closer look

Design an original room that feels inhabited before introducing the strange element.

Understanding the subject

Stranger Things is a television series, not a historical visual-art movement. Its imagery links ordinary social spaces, period references and supernatural threats within an ongoing narrative. Production choices vary by season and scene, so one shorthand palette cannot explain the whole series. Studying the contrast between a recognizable setting and an impossible event is more useful than presenting an AOI illustration as a lost production still.

AOI looking and making workshop

Design an original room that feels inhabited before introducing the strange element. Scuffed furniture, an unfinished game or a partly open door can establish everyday life. Then choose one disturbance: an unnatural shadow, a light source without an obvious origin, or vegetation appearing where it should not. Keep the room’s spatial structure clear so the disruption can be noticed. Avoid adding many unrelated symbols of nostalgia. An economical composition gives the viewer time to recognize what is ordinary and what has quietly gone wrong.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

An ordinary room changes

Create an original suspense scene in a modest 1980s-inspired family room, an unfinished board game and one inexplicably cold blue light beneath a closed door. Keep the room believable and the threat unseen.

The empty arcade

Illustrate an original deserted small-town arcade with warm cabinets fading into darkness and a single impossible vine crossing the ceiling. Use a clear aisle and restrained period detail, with no recognizable branding.

Uncanny daylight

Create an original suburban garden in bright afternoon light where one tree casts a shadow in the wrong direction. Keep everything else calm and ordinary; use composition rather than a visible monster for tension.
