Imaginative genre
Fantasy illustration makes impossible things feel connected by a world’s own visual rules. A strong image needs more than spectacular ingredients.

A closer look
Start with one event or question: a traveler finding a door inside a tree, or a small creature guarding an oversized seed.
Understanding the subject
Fantasy is a broad imaginative genre rather than one historical painting movement. It includes many kinds of worlds, moods and subjects, from intimate fairy tales to monumental invented landscapes. Illustrators make choices about scale, anatomy, materials and narrative emphasis to help the viewer understand the invention. A convincing picture need not be scientifically possible, but its parts benefit from relationships the viewer can follow.
AOI looking and making workshop
Start with one event or question: a traveler finding a door inside a tree, or a small creature guarding an oversized seed. Establish a scale reference and a clear light source before adding ornament. Repeat a few shapes or materials to make the world feel connected. Keep the focal action distinct from atmospheric detail. In generated work, inspect hands, supports and overlapping forms so accidental errors do not undermine the intended impossibility. The best surprise often comes from one extraordinary element within an otherwise understandable scene.
The prompt workshop
Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.
A small discovery
Create an original fantasy illustration of a traveler finding a tiny illuminated door inside a huge fallen tree, clear scale cues, soft forest light and one focused moment of curiosity.
A coherent invented world
Design an original mountain village built around giant seed pods, repeated organic structures and plausible walkways, with warm evening light and a small gathering at the center.
Quiet impossibility
Create an original fantasy still life of a teacup containing a miniature moving cloud above a plain wooden table. Keep the room ordinary and let the single impossible element carry the image.
