Cubism

Historical art movement

Cubism investigates how objects and pictorial space can be reorganized. It is more than breaking a face into random triangles.

A closer look

Choose a small group of objects whose forms you understand, such as a jug, a book and a bowl.

Understanding the subject

Cubism is associated with experiments in representation developed by particular artists in the early twentieth century. Faceted forms, shifting viewpoints and later collage practices are important topics, but individual phases and works differ. A fragmented image does not automatically belong to the movement. The relationship between recognizable objects and the constructed surface of the picture is a more useful starting point than a generic geometric effect.

AOI looking and making workshop

Choose a small group of objects whose forms you understand, such as a jug, a book and a bowl. Identify a few characteristic edges, then reorganize them while retaining enough clues for recognition. Use repeated angles or tonal intervals to connect the fragments. Avoid making every facet equally small, which can destroy hierarchy. In a collage-like experiment, let texture and shape have distinct roles. The exercise is to rebuild a pictorial relationship deliberately, not simply to apply a shattering filter to a photograph.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

A rebuilt still life

Create an original Cubist-inspired still life of a jug, book and bowl, a few large faceted planes and a restrained brown-blue palette. Preserve recognizable clues while deliberately reorganizing space.

Paper and object

Create an original collage-inspired composition of a guitar-like form, plain paper strips and wood-grain shapes, clear overlaps and varied scale. Use no copied newspaper text or identifiable artwork fragments.

A room in facets

Create an original geometric interpretation of a small kitchen, selected viewpoints combined through repeated angles and broad tonal areas. Keep a clear focal object and avoid uniform triangular fragmentation.

Creative studies to try

Explore these collected prompts as creative interpretations. They are starting points for image-making, not reproductions of historical artworks or evidence about a tradition.

Study 2 — Cubism

Apply the following visual style to my subject or project, preserving its core content and purpose. Interpret the subject through a Cubist composition of interlocking angular planes, fragmented geometry, and multiple viewpoints shown at once. Use a restrained palette of ochre, muted blue, charcoal, and cream. Balance recognizable details with abstract structure and subtle painted texture. Adapt the composition and palette to suit my subject. Do not add text unless my project calls for it.
