THE AOI STYLE ATLAS · EVERY IDEA LEADS SOMEWHERE

Cloudscape

Sky study · Weather as a subject

A cloudscape gives the sky the leading role. Cloud shape, changing light and the amount of open air can carry a picture even when the land is reduced to a narrow line.

A closer look

Compare the edges of different cloud forms, the direction of the light and the proportion of sky to ground. A convincing scene needs relationships between masses, not a repeated “fluffy cloud” stamp.

When the sky becomes the subject

Cloudscape describes a compositional emphasis rather than a movement with a founder. A painter may make rapid observations from life or use the sky to alter the mood of a larger landscape. The sky’s scale matters: a small horizon can make weather feel monumental, while a close crop invites attention to one illuminated cloud edge.

Constable’s observed weather

The Met records John Constable’s Cloud study, a watercolor-over-graphite sketch made around 1830–35, as part of his sustained attention to changing English skies. The museum says the page captures a September sun sinking through clouds while leaving the exact subject and date open. Observation and uncertainty both matter. The AOI collage here is an invented colour study, not a Constable work.

Paint a change, not a texture

Begin with three large values: lit cloud, shadow cloud and open sky. Place a horizon only after the sky reads as a coherent arrangement. Vary hard and soft edges; avoid equally sharp contours around every cloud. For a sequence, keep the viewpoint fixed and change the light or weather state so the viewer can see what actually moved.

A small poetic detour

Original words from the AOI studio.

Poetry

The horizon keeps a narrow place;
The clouds take nearly all the space.
A pale edge shifts, the shadows run—
The sky rewrites its borrowed sun.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

Start here · September light

Original cloud study over a very low dark horizon, descending warm sun partly hidden by uneven cloud banks, cool blue gaps, carefully varied soft and hard edges, no text or copied sketch.

Richer scene · Weather front

Original panoramic cloudscape with a distant rain front advancing across open fields, layered cloud masses and believable light direction, tiny land strip only for scale, painterly brush texture, no dramatic lightning.

Experiment · Four moments

Four original views of the same horizon from one fixed viewpoint at morning, noon, dusk and after rain; cloud formations and colour change coherently, uncluttered comparison grid, no labels or watermark.

A smile from the studio

Jokes

The cloud posed for a portrait, then changed its mind halfway through.
