Detailed Description

Babylonian art is the art of the ancient Babylonian civilization, produced in Mesopotamia between the 3rd and 1st millennia BC. It is often considered a precursor to Assyrian and Neo-Assyrian art, and has had considerable influence on neighbouring cultures, especially in the Persian Empire. Babylonian art is characterized by its use of cuneiform script for artworks other than monumental stone reliefs, and by the distinctive style of animal figures in relief. Other notable features include the use of glazed bricks, cylinder seals, and the production of metalwork, including elaborate decorated bowls and figurines. The earliest examples of Babylonian art date to the 3rd millennium BC, and include cylinder seals and carved stone reliefs. The best-known examples of Babylonian art are the reliefs from the palace of Assyrian king Ashurbanipal at Nineveh, which include the famous Lion Hunt of Ashurbanipal. Other notable examples of Babylonian art include the Ishtar Gate, the Processional Way, and the Standard of Ur.
