Detailed Description
South African art is a diverse and dynamic field, with a long and complex history. From the rock art of the San people to the contemporary art of the townships, South African art is rich and varied. Famous South African artists include the late great Nelson Mandela, who was an accomplished painter, and the internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge. South African art is also deeply influenced by the country’s many cultures, including the indigenous San people, the Zulu, Xhosa and Swazi peoples, as well as the Dutch, British and Indian settlers who arrived in the country over the centuries. One of the most iconic images of South African art is the “Ndebele house painting”. These brightly coloured geometric patterns are traditionally painted on the walls of Ndebele homes, and have become synonymous with South African art. Other popular forms of South African art include beadwork, woodcarving, pottery and weaving. South African artists often use traditional techniques and materials to create contemporary works of art with a uniquely African feel.
