The government controls what kind of art is produced and how it is distributed. North Korean artists are required to adhere to socialist realism, a style that glorifies the socialist state and its leaders. Famous North Korean artists include Kim Jong-il, who was the head of the country’s propaganda department, and Kim Jong-un, who is the current leader of the DPRK. Kim Jong-il was a painter and filmmaker, and Kim Jong-un is a photographer. Some of the most famous North Korean paintings include “The People’s Joy”, “The Glorious Fatherland”, and “The Great Leader Comrade Kim Jong-il”.
