Build the visual structure
Establish the main silhouette and a believable route through the scene before adding atmospheric effects. A bridge, stair or line of windows can connect foreground and distance. Let vapor obscure selected transitions without erasing every structural relationship.
Choose a limited set of luminous sources and make their influence consistent. Warm windows should affect nearby surfaces more than distant towers, while the sky can supply a broader cool fill. “Aether” is poetic language here, not a claim about a physical substance. The scene is invented architecture, not a record of an existing place.
A focused studio exercise
Draw one skyline under three atmospheric conditions while keeping the buildings unchanged. Compare which amount of obscurity creates mystery without making the city unreadable.
