A closer look

A single fern impression rests in a rough dark field, its central stem and selected leaf veins emitting a cool glow.

Preserve the impression

Real fossil impressions do not glow as shown here. This AOI proposal borrows their flattened texture and combines it with imagined phosphorescence. The reviewed image puts one fern-like silhouette on a nearly black, grainy ground. Pale printed leaf edges carry the form; the glow is limited to the stem and a few inner veins. That restraint keeps it from looking like a neon sign.

Choose one clear organic imprint and let broken edges show how it meets the surface. Make the surrounding field rough rather than perfectly smooth. Lay in a faint cool line along the primary stem, then allow only selected branches to brighten. If the whole leaf lights evenly, it loses the sense of an old trace being discovered in stages.

Let darkness do some work

The dark areas explain the glow and give the viewer room to inspect individual fronds. An off-center impression can feel more found than staged. For a new image, specify the fossil-like subject, the paper or stone grain and exactly where light emerges. Review the shape without the glow first; if the impression is not legible, improve the print before brightening it.
