Creative experiment · volcanic glass as openwork
Obsidian Lacework imagines black volcanic glass drawn into a pierced, lace-like sculpture. Thin branching bridges hold broad openings, and sunset glints make the fragile network legible.

A round suspended lattice of black glass opens around the sun between pale stone columns.
Give the dark material breathing room
Obsidian is real volcanic glass; the immense self-supporting network in the reviewed image is an AOI material fiction, not a practical glassmaking technique. Its strength as an image comes from absence. Large holes expose the pale sky while the remaining black ribs branch into smaller perforations. At a distance the sculpture reads as a single round silhouette; near it, the threadlike edges invite inspection.
Design the largest openings first, then connect them with a few thicker structural paths. Only after those are clear should finer webbing spread into the gaps. Let some edges catch warm points of light, but keep most of the glass dark. Uniform sparkle would erase its silhouette and turn the piece into jewelry rather than an airy spatial structure.
Use light to explain the void
Backlighting is essential because black-on-black detail disappears. A quiet stone setting and open horizon let the viewer see through the lattice. For a new composition, specify the outer silhouette, the number of major voids and the sun's position. Review both the whole object and one junction: the first must remain coherent, the second should still look glassy and edged rather than like woven rope.

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.
One openwork disk
Create an original circular openwork sculpture of black obsidian-like glass with five large holes and delicate branching ribs, suspended before a warm sunset. No text or logo.
Lace in a pavilion
Create an original Obsidian Lacework artwork between pale stone columns, one coherent dark glass lattice with razor-thin smaller perforations and restrained amber edge highlights. No words or logo.
Study the bridge
Create an original close study of a thin branching obsidian-like glass bridge between two larger openings, translucent edges and small reflected sparks. No text or logo.
