Kinetic sculpture · Suspended balance and motion
A mobile is a sculpture whose components can move in relation to one another, often through a suspended arrangement of arms and shapes. Its composition changes with motion and viewpoint. Empty space, weight and the paths of individual parts are as important as the forms themselves.

A readable hierarchy of hanging arms, pivots and weighted shapes, with room for movement between components. Shadows can form a second changing composition. A suspended object is not automatically a successful mobile: the relationships must remain legible.
Movement enters the composition
The Calder Foundation records that Marcel Duchamp named Calder’s kinetic sculptures mobiles in 1931. This is a specific historical association, not a reason to attribute every hanging construction to Calder or imitate one of his works.
Mobile here means kinetic sculpture, not a telephone. It is distinct from a stabile, whose principal structure remains stationary. Some artworks combine moving and fixed elements; the distinction is useful without forcing every sculpture into a simple binary.
Balance is more than symmetry
An arm can balance unequal shapes at unequal distances from a pivot. Visual asymmetry can therefore coexist with physical equilibrium. In a concept drawing, show enough of the suspension to explain how the parts relate rather than allowing forms to float without support.
Leave room for the components to pass one another. Consider the sculpture from below and from the side, and include its shadow in the composition. A still image suggests these relationships but does not verify actual balance, friction or motion.
Study a hierarchy of movement
Begin with a small number of branches. Give one arm a broad slow-looking sweep and another a compact cluster, then compare the spaces between them. Avoid adding more parts merely to make the work appear complex.
The AOI images are original proposals rather than tested kinetic objects. A physical version needs careful material choice, secure suspension and direct trials of movement. For image generation, explicitly request visible pivots, coherent hanging supports and an original arrangement.
A small poetic detour
Original words from the AOI studio.
Poetry
A little weight, a longer arm;
The restless shape remains in calm.
The air revises what we see,
And space becomes a moving sea.
The prompt workshop
Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.
Start here · Leaf-like plates
Original suspended mobile sculpture concept with thin branching brass rods, translucent blue and ivory leaf-like plates, visible pivots and hanging threads, generous spaces between components and soft gallery shadows. No copied sculpture or text.
Study · Unequal balance
Original mobile concept with two unequal clusters of small pale discs arranged at different distances from a clear pivot, slender metal arms, quiet background and side lighting. Show physical support relationships, not unsupported floating objects.
Experimental · Paper and shadow
Original hanging mobile made of folded paper-like shapes in muted coral, cream and charcoal, an airy asymmetrical structure casting a delicate shadow on a pale wall. Visible suspension, no labels or signature.
A smile from the studio
Jokes
The mobile asked the gallery to give it some space.
Its smallest disc said it was carrying the balance of the conversation.
