Speculative genre and visual approach
Dark fantasy brings fantastical worlds or events into contact with fear, danger and moral uncertainty. It is a flexible genre label, not a requirement that every image be nearly black or contain graphic violence.

A coherent world, a meaningful threat and a clear emotional focus matter more than decorative gloom; beauty and danger can occupy the same composition.
Give the darkness a narrative purpose
In the BFI's interview about Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro discusses choice and the relationship between the real and imaginary worlds. This provides one specific example of fantasy carrying difficult human questions rather than functioning only as visual escape.
A new scene should likewise have a clear situation. What is desired, what is threatened and what choice remains possible? A ruined tower or elaborate creature becomes more engaging when it participates in that situation.
Make the world coherent
Choose a small number of material and spatial rules. An invented forest, city or interior can be unfamiliar while still having consistent light, weight and scale. Contradictions should serve the story rather than result from unrelated visual references.
Establish the human or other central figure's relationship to the setting. Is the figure trapped, tempted, protected or uncertain? Pose and distance can communicate these possibilities without an explanatory caption.
Beauty can intensify unease
A carefully illuminated object or appealing pathway may invite attention while another detail complicates that invitation. This tension can be stronger than making every surface dirty and every silhouette threatening.
Use contrast selectively. Reserve the sharpest edge, strongest color or brightest light for the relationship that matters. A limited palette can still contain warmth, and a bright scene can still be frightening if its circumstances are disturbing.
Keep neighboring genres distinct
Dark fantasy may overlap with horror, Gothic fiction and high fantasy, but those labels do not describe exactly the same emphasis. A story's imagined world, emotional effect and treatment of the supernatural all matter. Avoid inventing rigid boundaries where creators use the terms flexibly.
For an original visual exercise, build one scene around a difficult decision and another around a discovery. Compare what each needs from the setting and light. The retained AOI images are interpretations; they should not be presented as frames from an existing film or as evidence of a historical fantasy movement.
