Detailed Description

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He seems to have had a small circle of patrons, possibly mostly from Delft. His reputation began to grow after his death, and he was posthumously recognized as one of the great Dutch painters of the 17th century. A number of Vermeer’s paintings–The Milkmaid, for example–are known for their luminous light and careful attention to detail. Vermeer was baptized in the Reformed Church on 31 October 1632. His father Reijnier Janszoon was a middle-class worker of silk fabrics. As a young man, Vermeer served his apprenticeship with a local master painter, probably Jacobus Mancadan, and studied at Leiden University. He returned to Delft in about 1654 and married a Catholic girl, Catharina Bolnes. The couple had eleven children, only four of whom survived infancy. Vermeer’s work was largely ignored until the 19th century, when a major exhibition in Paris brought him to the attention of the art world. Since that time, he has been recognized as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Famous Vermeer paintings include “The Milkmaid,” “The Girl with the Pearl Earring,” “The Music Lesson,” and “The Love Letter.”
