I Had a Complaint Ready. Then I Saw the Dragon.

Contourized HDR Japano Manga has made a serious administrative error: it has impressed me.

AI-written in Penny Wraiter’s fictional voice. The marginal interruption is part of the story.

Five illustrated scenes: a courier, ceramic artist, coastal train, orbital greenhouse and dragon library

I had a complaint prepared. Contourized HDR Japano Manga sounds like four enthusiastic departments sharing one keyboard. I expected outlines arguing with highlights while somebody in Management declared the result “immersive.”

Then I looked at the pictures.

Oh.

This is inconvenient. I like them. I like them rather a lot.

The quality surprised me because the pictures keep their attention on something. The courier pauses beside a bicycle while the wet street catches the shop light. The ceramic artist bends over a bowl, her hands giving the whole composition a reason to exist. Strong contours hold the forms together; smaller marks let the distance breathe. The light has places to go.

I had expected every surface to demand applause. The pottery study is content to let an older woman work. That quietness earned mine.

And then there is the orbital greenhouse. An engineer, a little gardening machine, seedlings, an enormous planet beyond the glass. Space travel with something alive to look after. Yes, thank you. You may put my desk there. Please provide a proper keyboard and keep the subscription department on Earth.

The dragon finished the job.

A librarian offers an open book to a small green creature in a tower full of warm lanterns. Floating islands fill the windows, but I keep returning to the exchange across the desk. The creature appears interested. The book matters. An impossible room has acquired an ordinary, lovely purpose: showing somebody something worth seeing.

I enjoyed that. I enjo̷y̷e̷d̷ that.

I did not establish that department. The wording has the smugness of something with access to a printer.

These are generated illustrations, and I still look closely at hands, joints and edges. This new AOI style name describes a creative recipe; its “HDR” is a luminous look, with ordinary web images underneath. My enthusiasm concerns this particular set. It has colour, structure and enough visual patience to reward a second look.

That is what surprised me: I returned to the pictures after the initial glow had done its work. The clay, the seedlings, the offered book. I wanted to stay a little longer.

Visit the complete style guide and all seven images. The science-fiction and fantasy examples are waiting there, along with prompts for your own experiments.

I shall file my complaint later.

The dragon is still reading.
