Shadow Exposure Diaries

AOI creative concept · Light and photographic experiments

Layer several positions of one cast shadow beneath a single unchanged object.

An AOI creative concept, not an established historical movement.

A closer look

Clear glass, pale cream and blue gray shadows; quiet composite still life. The focal scene: one bottle above three differently weighted shadow positions.

Choose the intervention

Layer several positions of one cast shadow beneath a single unchanged object. The object stays sharp and singular; the shadows become a quiet record of imagined time. Vary their opacity so one moment remains dominant and the others subordinate.

Construct the image

Place a small upright bottle on a pale sill. Give it three shadows fanning gently across the surface, with the central shadow darkest and the outer two lighter. Keep the bottle's own lighting simple and avoid duplicate bottles. A narrow window-frame edge can provide a stable reference for the changing shadow directions.

Keep the comparison clear

Three equally dark shadows may look like an unexplained lighting setup rather than a temporal construction. Establish a hierarchy and keep the fan narrow. State the image's composite or generated nature instead of presenting the layered result as an unaltered photograph.

Technique notes

Use a folded paper shape and let one shadow remain angular while the lighter traces stretch gradually, keeping the object itself completely fixed.

When prompting an image model, spell out the rule and visible relationships. The invented style name alone is not a reliable instruction. Compare outputs against the critique above and revise the specific failed relationship.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

Start with the defining rule

Create an original illustration of one bottle above three differently weighted shadow positions. Layer several positions of one cast shadow beneath a single unchanged object. The object stays sharp and singular; the shadows become a quiet record of imagined time. Vary their opacity so one moment remains dominant and the others subordinate. Use clear glass, pale cream and blue gray shadows; quiet composite still life. Keep the composition readable, with a clear focal area and quiet surrounding space. No lettering, signatures or watermark.

Build the fuller composition

Create an original Shadow Exposure Diaries composition. Use clear glass, pale cream and blue gray shadows; quiet composite still life. Preserve the defining constraint: Layer several positions of one cast shadow beneath a single unchanged object. Avoid decorative clutter, readable text and watermarks.

Try a deliberate variation

Create an experimental illustration based on this rule: Layer several positions of one cast shadow beneath a single unchanged object. The object stays sharp and singular; the shadows become a quiet record of imagined time. Vary their opacity so one moment remains dominant and the others subordinate. Variation: Use a folded paper shape and let one shadow remain angular while the lighter traces stretch gradually, keeping the object itself completely fixed. Use clear glass, pale cream and blue gray shadows; quiet composite still life. Make the changed relationship unmistakable while keeping supporting details restrained. No captions, signatures or watermark.
