Ribbon Axis Detours

AOI creative concept · Rhythm and geometric systems

Make a single broad ribbon repeatedly approach a straight axis but never cross it.

An AOI creative concept, not an established historical movement.

A closer look

Muted red, graphite and warm white; broad ribbon with clean edges. The focal scene: one ribbon making three different detours around a straight axis.

Establish the system

Make a single broad ribbon repeatedly approach a straight axis but never cross it. The axis supplies discipline; the ribbon's detours supply variation. The picture should reveal several different ways of avoiding the same boundary.

Place the shapes

Draw a thin vertical line slightly right of center. Bring a broad muted red ribbon toward it three times, using a tight bend, a wide loop and a shallow curve. Keep the ribbon's width mostly constant and show clear overlaps where needed. Leave the opposite side of the axis almost empty.

Make the exception count

Crossing the axis accidentally destroys the rule. Check each near-contact and vary the distance enough that the encounters feel distinct. Avoid adding multiple ribbons until the single one has a readable route and a convincing termination.

Technique notes

Use a horizontal axis and let the ribbon's shadow cross the boundary even though the ribbon itself never does.

When prompting an image model, spell out the rule and visible relationships. The invented style name alone is not a reliable instruction. Compare outputs against the critique above and revise the specific failed relationship.

The prompt workshop

Original creative exercises. These prompts create new illustrations, not documentary evidence.

Start with the defining rule

Create an original illustration of one ribbon making three different detours around a straight axis. Make a single broad ribbon repeatedly approach a straight axis but never cross it. The axis supplies discipline; the ribbon's detours supply variation. The picture should reveal several different ways of avoiding the same boundary. Use muted red, graphite and warm white; broad ribbon with clean edges. Keep the composition readable, with a clear focal area and quiet surrounding space. No lettering, signatures or watermark.

Build the fuller composition

Create an original Ribbon Axis Detours composition. Use muted red, graphite and warm white; broad ribbon with clean edges. Preserve the defining constraint: Make a single broad ribbon repeatedly approach a straight axis but never cross it. Avoid decorative clutter, readable text and watermarks.

Try a deliberate variation

Create an experimental illustration based on this rule: Make a single broad ribbon repeatedly approach a straight axis but never cross it. The axis supplies discipline; the ribbon's detours supply variation. The picture should reveal several different ways of avoiding the same boundary. Variation: Use a horizontal axis and let the ribbon's shadow cross the boundary even though the ribbon itself never does. Use muted red, graphite and warm white; broad ribbon with clean edges. Make the changed relationship unmistakable while keeping supporting details restrained. No captions, signatures or watermark.
